This one is original? Did the pioneers do this? Do you know what it signifies?

Very interesting, just wondering if it was an old tradition to mark the trails by the early settlers. I´m not a hiker, probably would be looking at the mountains, lakes, trees, animals, anything but the trails and get lost. ( Spent every chance I had in Seattle, to get a away from the Bremerton Naval Base. Mt. Rainier dominated the skyline.) Very interesting photo.
